Yo Momma / You Mess Me Up

A 2 track funk single (5m 58s) — released May 21st 2012 on One Note Records

Though The New Mastersounds have been touring relentlessly stateside for the last 7 years, it's still appropriate to describe them as the UK's finest soul-jazz outfit. The band's love affair with America is clearly blossoming though, as can be heard on their forthcoming studio LP (their 8th) 'Out on the Faultline'.

This first single from the album features 2 cuts that cloak their northern English roots as they sound ever-more influenced by, and assimilated into, the heritage of African American music, plus their complete immersion into the US jam scene that often demands 4-hour sets late into the night.

'Yo Momma' features gang vocals from the boys and, like Mick Jagger's, their approach is laden with drawl & attitude, whilst the music is so tight yet so loose. The track evolves into an amazing instrumental ending, a long and subtly building groove with some unbelievably funky organ riffs and punchy open drumming.

On the flip 'You Mess Me Up', with nods to The Meters, they deliver a grittier performance that manages to cram so much into just over 2 minutes. It's a perfect slice of 60's style southern funk with a touch of the blues thrown in, very much alive and primed for the dancefloor or BBQ!
