A 12 track jazz piano album (1h 25s) — released August 23rd 2004 on One Note Records

Eddie Roberts: celebrated UK guitarist, producer, writer & bandleader Roughneck is the long-awaited solo project from maverick British guitarist Eddie Roberts, founder and leader of The New Mastersounds. Roughneck combines firing hard bop, beautiful modal space and nu-jazz beats to create a sound described by Parisian label Le Maquis as 'St Germain with attitude'. The album is a catalogue of musical exploration through 20 years of listening and playing. Roughneck features an inspired jazz version of Lose Yourself, by Eminem, from the film 8 Mile. Another highlight of the album is an original arrangement of the Stanley Turrentine classic, Sugar, featuring the silky vocals of Iain Mackenzie. In May Eddie toured with sax legend Lou Donaldson, recreating his finest Blue Note recordings. Only the week before he was performing to packed audiences with the New Mastersounds at the House of Blues in Chicago. Eddie has recently worked with Mr Scruff on remixes of Ramsey Lewis 'Do What You Wanna ' for Universal, and John Arnold's 'Inside'. On One Note Records, The New Mastersounds? own label. 'Entertaining & sophisticated: proper jazz music for the 2000's. Not a cocktail or lift in sight!' ...Quantic'

"An incredible solo album for the guitarist from the New Mastersounds. Self-produced by Eddie it's got a real phat, sampled soul-jazz vibe, though it's all real musicians. Some great open Blakeyesque drumming introduces the groover 'Diggin Around'. 'Sugar' features Ian Mackenzie providing sleazy jazz vocals on a Mark Murphy tip. Elsewhere there's a tribute to one of his influences, the unique Gabor Szabo. 'New Life' is lovely rolling stoner jazz. A proper album and a pleasure to listen to all the way through. " - Grandslam Magzine

"This (his first solo effort) is maybe similarly dependent on the past for inspiration, but it's delivered with enough good humour, invention and vigour to soften the heart of all but the most hardened jazz snob (your humble reviewer included)."... -

"...Roberts is an incisive and dynamic player with a capacious bag of tricks...takes the soul jazz sound into the 21st century?" - Jazzwise Magazine

"If you think jazz is a dead man's soundtrack, you're stupid. If you think contemporary jazz is in a trough, you've just not heard the right stuff. Like this." - Nick Churchill Bournemouth Echo

"Entertaining & sophisticated: proper jazz music for the 2000's. not a cocktail or lift in sight!" - Quantic

"Nimble-fingered frisky goodness from the NMS frontman." - Mr Scruff

Delightful ! - Gilles Peterson
